Leeds vs. Wigan Preview: Whites look to build on midweek win as they welcome Wigan to Elland Road

Leeds United welcome Paul Cook's Wigan Athletic to Elland Road this Saturday afternoon, as they look to build on their impressive win over Millwall in midweek.

After being 2-0 at half-time, the Whites defeated Millwall 3-2 at Elland Road on Tuesday night.

The three points moved Leeds back to the top of the Championship table, despite their poor form in recent weeks. Leeds currently have 55 points, sitting two points ahead of West Brom in second and four points above Nottingham Forest in third.

Meanwhile, Wigan go into this weekend's game after defeating Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 at home on Tuesday night. That made it two wins and two losses from their previous four league games, however those two victories are their only wins in 17. And the Latics travel to Elland Road on Saturday having won just one of their 15 away league games this season, drawing four and losing ten.

Head coach Paul Cook currently sees his Wigan side sit 22nd in the league table on 26 points, four points from safety.

Despite Wigan's struggles this season, Leeds United head coach Marcelo Bielsa isn't expecting an easy game. In his pre-match press conference with week, he said: "It's a team that don't have a good position in the table, They are in a positive moment, they have a regular base in the team and they've won important matches.

"We know we're not going to face a simple, easy match. We respect them and we know we have to work a lot in the match."

Team news

Leeds can welcome back defender Gaetano Berardi, who returns after recovering from a calf problem, while full-back Barry Douglas is close to a return to training. Kalvin Phillips remains unavailable through suspension, he'll miss Leeds' next two games.

The Whites will be bolstered by the addition of 22-year-old French striker Jean-Kévin Augustin, who has arrived from Bundesliga side Red Bull Leipzig on loan until the end of the season, however Leeds have the option of signing Augustin on a permanent basis in the summer.

Previous meetings

When these two sides met earlier in the season, Leeds United ran out 2-0 winners thanks to a brace from striker Patrick Bamford.

Leeds United are unbeaten in five or their last six meetings with the Latics (3W 2D 1L), with the one defeat coming at Elland Road last season, where Leeds lost 2-1 to 10-man Wigan in April.
