Southampton vs Leeds United Preview: Whites travel to St Mary's for penultimate game of the season

Leeds United travel to St Mary’s Stadium on Tuesday evening as they face Southampton in their final away game of the season.

The Whites head into the clash full of confidence following last Saturday's emphatic 4-0 victory over Burnley away at Turf Moor.

Mateusz Klich netted his fourth goal of the season just before half-time, thus become the highest-scoring Polish player in Premier League history.

Leeds doubled their lead on the hour mark when Alioski's long-ranged effort was flicked goalward by Jack Harrison. The winger later delivered two assists to take his tally for the season to eight goals and eight assists - no English midfielder has been involved in more Premier League goals this campaign Harrison.

Club record-signing Rodrigo came off the bench to score two goals in two minutes, firstly chipping the ball over the top ex-Leeds goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell. The 30-year-old Spanish striker then took the ball around the 'keeper to tap into an empty net to secure Leeds' 16th league win of the season.

After the results at the weekend, Leeds United now need just one win from their remaining two games to guarantee a top-half finish. The lowest the Whites can finish is 11th, the highest is 7th depending on goal difference.

Meanwhile, Southampton picked up a second-straight victory last time out, defeating already relegated Fulham 3-1 at home courtesy of goals from Che Adams, Nathan Tella, and Theo Walcott.

The Saints have little to play for as they sit 14th place on 43 points, unable to achieve a top-half finish, however, they will no doubt be looking to end the season on a high and stretch their unbeaten home run to five games.

Ralph Hasenhüttl's side will have an advantage on visitors Leeds as they will be backed by up to 10,000 Southampton fans on Tuesday evening. St Mary's Stadium open's its doors to supporters for the first time in over a year as the UK takes its next step out of lockdown.
