Leeds v Sheffield Wednesday Preview: Owls look to spoil Whites' top two hopes

Updated: Oct 26, 2019

Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United side prepare for the visit of Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday to Elland Road on Saturday evening.

Leeds go into the game on a high having picked up three points away at Deepdale last Tuesday night, seeing of Alex Neil's Preston North End with a 2-0 victory.

The win saw the Whites jump back up into second in the Championship table, and after Sheffield United's 1-1 draw away at Birmingham City on Wednesday night, Leeds find themselves a point clear of the Blades who sit in third.

Heading into match number 42 of the 18/19 Championship campaign, Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa admitted that Leeds "have to win the five games left" of the season.

"When you have less points to win, during the last part of the league, the gap for mistakes is reduced." he added.

Bielsa was also full of praise for Saturday's opponents Sheffield Wednesday, stating that "From the change of the coach, they create more. They use less players, and they've kept the style of play, from which the positive results have started."

Owls look to make late push for top six

It doesn't take an expert to know how much of a turn around there has been at Sheffield Wednesday over recent months, with the appointment of Steve Bruce as manager in February certainly helping the Owls make a late play-off charge.

Under Bruce, Wednesday have only lost one of the thirteen games he's been in charge of the team, winning six and drawing six.

The Owls will feel they still have something to play for this season as they currently sit in 10th place in the league and just six points off of the play-off places.

Previous meetings

Leeds United have been the better of the two clubs when they've faced at Elland Road, losing just one in six meetings. The one loss did however come last season when a brace from Atdhe Nuhiu secured a 2-1 win for Wednesday.

But in September earlier this season, these sides drew 1-1 at Hillsborough, after a long range effort from Mateusz Klich cancelled out Adam Reach's first half spectacular.
