Derby County vs Leeds Preview: Leeds look to bounce back in play-off semi-final first leg

Updated: Oct 26, 2019

Leeds United travel to Pride Park on Saturday as they take on Frank Lampard's Derby County in the first leg of their Championship play-off semi-final tie.

The Whites go into the game on the back of a 3-2 defeat away to Ipswich Town less than a week ago, which made it three defeats and a draw in Leeds' past four games.

Elsewhere, Derby head into the clash after a 3-1 win at home against West Brom last Sunday, extending their unbeaten run to six games. The win secured a 6th place finish for the Rams, setting up a mouth-watering play-off semi-final tie with Leeds United.

Leeds will be hoping their recent form doesn't hinder them in the play-offs, and that they'll bounce back with the travelling support behind them in the first leg, who will be expecting the never-say-die attitude they've come used to seeing throughout the season.

Whites suffer more injury woes

Leeds have been hit with a set-back as in the press-conference ahead of the game, head coach Marcelo Bielsa revealed that he is missing some marquee players. He said: "Stuart Dallas will play, but Tyler Roberts won't. There's a doubt with Jansson and his ankle."

Aside from these injuries, the same side that played against Ipswich Town will be expected to start at Pride Park. However, with recent success by the Leeds United Under-23’s squad, some of them will be looking for first team appearances.

Derby also hit with first team worries

Frank Lampard will have his own worries regarding team selection, as striker Martyn Waghorn and midfielder Duane Holmes could miss the tie through injury.

Waghorn was a first half substitute during their win over West Brom, with Holmes being take off later on with cramp. Lampard has stated that both players will be assessed, and a decision will be made on whether they are deemed fit enough to play.

Previous meetings

Leeds last visited Pride Park in back in August, for what was the second game of the 18/19 season. It was a game in which the Whites were rampant, as a brace from striker Kemar Roofe and goals from Mateuzs Klich and Alioski handed Derby a 4-1 demolishing.

The encounter at Elland Road in January was a little more fruitful. Before the match, ‘spygate’ dominated the headlines of the media after a member of Leeds United's coaching staff was caught But despite the controversy, the Whites produced a fine performance as goals Roofe and forward Jack Harrison secured a 2-0 victory and the double over Frank Lampard's Derby County.
