Birmingham vs. Leeds Preview: Whites look to return to winning ways away at lacklustre Blues

Leeds United travel to St Andrew's on Sunday afternoon as they take on Birmingham City, who are managed by former Whites assistant head coach Pep Clotet.

Marcelo Bielsa's side could only draw 1-1 with Preston at Elland Road on Boxing Day, extending their winless run to three games (D2 L1).

The Whites remain in second place, but after only picking up one point on Thursday, Leeds' gap to third shortened as they now sit just eight points above Brentford, while also now trailing Championship league leaders West Brom by three points.

A win on Sunday for Leeds would secure their first double of the season, as they defeated Birmingham City 1-0 in their Centenary game at Elland Road in October, thanks to a goal from Leeds-born midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

Meanwhile, the Blues go into this weekend's game in poor form after drawing one and losing three of their previous four games. Birmingham have also failed to pick up a single win from their last four home league games (1D 3L). The last time they lost three consecutive home league games was in March 2018.

Pep Clotet will be hoping his Birmingham side turn their form around against his former club, and climb away from the relegation zone as they currently sit in 16th on 29 points, just eight points above the bottom three.

Team news

Birmingham City remain without Jake Clarke-Salter (shoulder), Marc Roberts (ankle) and Maikel Kieftenbeld (knee).

Elsewhere, Leeds United midfielders Pablo Hernandez (knee) and Adam Forshaw (hip) are still out, however Tyler Roberts and Jamie Shackleton could feature after recovering from injury.

Quick match facts

- The Blues have won 1-0 in both of their last two home league games against Leeds United.

- Leeds haven't picked up a clean sheet in any of their last 11 away league visits to St Andrew's, having conceded exactly one goal in each of the last nine.

- The Whites have won 11 away league games in 2019 - their most in a calendar year since 2009 when they were in League One.
