Birmingham v Leeds Preview: Whites look to maintain top two spot with win over Blues

Updated: Oct 26, 2019

Next up for Leeds United is a trip to St Andrew's this Saturday afternoon, as they take on Birmingham City and former manager Garry Monk.

Marcelo Bielsa's side head into the game on the back of dramatic 3-2 victory over Millwall at Elland Road last weekend.

That result saw the Whites jump back up into second in the Championship table and two points ahead of Sheffield United in third, after the Blades lost 3-2 to Bristol City at Brammal Lane.

Leeds will be hoping to kick off their remaining seven games of the season with a win, but speaking to the press ahead of the game, Bielsa praised Saturday's opponents Birmingham City, saying "They have good strikers, good wingers, and very solid in defence.

"That they beat us (at Elland Road in September) is not the only reason to respect them."

The Whites will be buoyed by the return of Kemar Roofe after Bielsa revealed that the striker is "healthy" and "wants to be in the squad."

Roofe had missed Leeds' previous six games after picking up an injury during their 2-1 win over Bolton at Elland Road in February.

Blues boss Garry Monk prepares for visit of former club

Ever since Garry Monk left Leeds in 2017, it has always been an intense affair every time he has come up against his former club and Saturday will be no different.

Birmingham will want to pick themselves up after a 3-2 loss away at West Brom last Friday night, suffering a fifth straight defeat.

The Blues, who have recently been hit with a nine point deduction, currently sit 18th in the league table and just four points above the relegation zone.

Previous meetings

Birmingham took all three points from Elland Road after beating Leeds 2-1 back in September, handing them their first defeat of the 18/19 Championship campaign. And the Whites haven't won at St Andrew's since 2017, winning 3-1 under Monk.
