Barnsley v Leeds Preview: Whites look to return to winning ways with a visit to Barnsley

Leeds United return to Championship action on Sunday, as they travel to Oakwell to take on Barnsley in their first Yorkshire Derby of the season.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side will be looking to bounce back from their first league defeat of the season two weeks ago, as Swansea City scored late on to secure a 1-0 win at Elland Road.

The Whites fell from the top of the table as the Swans leapfrogged them into first, but after theirs and Charlton's defeat on Saturday, a win would take Leeds back to the summit.

Elsewhere, Barnsley are still searching for their first win since securing a 1-0 victory over Fulham at home on the opening day of the season. Daniel Stendel's side since then have lost three and drawn two of their other five Championship games. The Tykes currently see themselves just one place above the relegation zone in 21st.

Team news

Bielsa revealed in his press conference on Friday that Leeds United have no fresh injury concerns ahead of Sunday's trip to Barnsley.

He also revealed that 20-year-old forward Tyler Roberts could feature after returning from a lengthy spell on the sidelines through injury. 28-year-old defender Luke Ayling also looks set for a return, but Bielsa stated that he'll first feature for the Under 23’s before being included in the first team.

Meanwhile, Daniel Stendel can welcome back multiple players from injury to the Barnsley squad, including former Leeds United man Alex Mowatt. The 24-year-old midfielder scored 12 goals for the Whites over four years and has already netted 9 for Barnsley. He is sure to be a danger man for the Tykes.

Previous meetings

Leeds United have a strong record against Barnsley having won four of their previous five meetings with them, however Oakwell has never been a happy hunting ground for the Whites as they've won just two and lost four of their last six visits there.

The most recent game at Barnsley was a positive result for the Leeds though, as first-half goals from Alioski and Saiz secured a 2-0 victory. Prior to that it was a five goal thriller at Oakwell in January of 2017, but Leeds were on the wrong side of a 3-2 score line.
