Leeds 0-1 Swansea: Late winner silences Elland Road as Swansea take all three points and go top

Updated: Dec 1, 2019

Second half substitute Wayne Routledge ensured that Swansea City defeated Leeds United 1-0 at Elland Road, taking all three points back to Wales and seeing themselves go to the top of the Championship table.

Marcelo Bielsa named just one change from the side that starting in their 3-0 win away at Stoke City the previous week. A returning Liam Cooper came in to replace Gaetano Berardi at centre-back.

It was an even opening to the game but Leeds had the better of the chances. Alioski missed two opportunities within the first 8 minutes of the game, firing a shot over the bar and then a shot straight at Swansea's goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.

Leeds eventually took control of the game, keeping the ball and passing around nicely. Bamford missed a great chance to put Leeds in front on the 16 minute mark after Stuart Dallas delivered a cross to the near post from the right, but Bamford headed well wide from close range.

The home side came close again 10 minutes from half-time after Pablo Hernandez' pass through the legs found Adam Forshaw. Forshaw laid the ball off to Klich who found Forshaw again on the edge of the box only for Forshaw to fire a shot just over the bar.

The closest Leeds came was in added time when Liam Cooper met Kalvin Phillips' corner. Cooper's header crashed off the crossbar and then on the rebound he hit just over. 0-0 was the half-time score, but Leeds United would have gone into the break the happier of the two teams.

It was end to end in the second half as Swansea City pressed Leeds a lot more. The visitors appealed for a penalty when Surridge threw himself to the floor on 67 minutes, but referee Darren Bond said play on.

six minutes later Leeds came close to breaking the deadlock when substitute Helder Costa teed up Hernandez on the edge of the area, but his effort flew just over the bar.

Leeds United were to rue their missed opportunities at the last as despite their dominance, Swansea City managed to break the deadlock and take the lead. After a corner was poorly cleared, the ball went back into the box and substitute Wayne Routledge managed to convert for the visitors.

Swansea players celebrate going 1-0 ahead

Swansea City managed to hold in the four minutes of added time to win 1-0 and take all three points from Elland Road. The Swans go into the international break two points clear at the top of the Championship table while Leeds sit in third.
